Interview with PawSpot

Ex-blogger Reid Morrow recently did an excellent interview with the CEO PawSpot.com. It is really one of the better Podcasts I’ve heard both in general and from Reid’s past interviews. He asks a lot of great questions including one about the ideal elevator pitch and how the CEO would go about with his own 30-second pitch. I thought this was an extremely helpful podcast as it gave me some insight as to what measures need to be taken to achieve the organic growth I’m looking for with my own project. This one is really worth giving a second listen to. Thanks to Reid Morrow for doing this podcast and letting me put it up here. Enjoy.

Contest Update

We’re very close to Walamu beta and it’s just a matter of time before the full site launches. First of all, I want to thank the entrepreneurs that are supporting me in getting this out there and participating in the Walamu contest. Among them:

Tom Barrett of www.leftofme.com

Dave Askaripour of www.mindpetals.com

Josiah Mackenzie of www.mypalpad.com

Saadh Shehzad of www.saadh.com

Jafar of www.jafarkay.blogspot.com

So far Tom Barrett of www.leftofme.com is certainly in the lead in terms of the contest, nevermind the self-acknowledged irrelevance of his website. But hey, I appreciate it all the same. Good luck and if anyone still wants to join there is still time. The contest ends August 21, 2006. Also, thanks to all the beta testers that are lined up to take their first test drive of Walamu, it’s truly exciting to see.

As for the sail boat, I’m just reminding myself that I’m about to leave the dock and it’s soon going to be time to eat, breathe, and sleep business. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Walamu Contest

In an effort to get the word out there about Walamu, I’m holding a contest to see who can bring the most traffic to Walamu.com. Whoever has the most referring links to Walamu.com by August 31st wins the following:

  • Everyone of my posts ending with a plug for your site for an entire month.
  • A link to your site at a highly visible part of my site for two months.
  • A review of your business or site on my blog.
  • I will guest blog on your site if you’d like.
  • I will offer my opinion on your business for whatever it’s worth.
  • RookieTees.com will giveaway a t-shirt of your choice (Hilarious tees, check them out).
  • A free rainbow colored spot on WriteonMyBoard.com.

Leave a comment here or use the contact link on the sidebar to let me know if you’re participating. I’ll post an update in about a week so you know where you stand. Good luck.

The Essential Ingredient

No not tomatoes…read on.

I guess one of the best ways to beat writer’s block is to just keep writing. So as far as business goes some things I’ve been wondering about lately is how online businesses must rely on interactivity. That’s the essential ingredient. It’s the name of the new age when it comes to the Internet. Without it, you don’t have squat. Interactivity is what makes the social networking behemoths what they are today. It’s also what makes eBay the world’s largest auctioning website. I’m not talking about just the ability to “poke” someone on Facebook or send someone a message on MySpace. It’s also about allowing the user to customize their web experience. Customizability is interactivity on the web. When eBay allows you to refine your search, whether it be according to price, date listed, brand, geography, height, weight, or color, that’s interactivity at work. In order to survive on the web, you need the essential ingredient called interactivity.

When you do business on the web, you’re no longer doing business with a flat demographic like you would with a brick-and-mortar store. On the web, you’re literally serving a hugely varying demographic that’s dynamic in so many ways. That’s why customizability (i.e., interactivity) is a must. You’re not just trying to please one demographic, you’re trying to please a million and one. This is why it’s so important to shape your website to suit the masses. This means doing things like allowing your users to refine their search in ways you probably hadn’t thought of.

And now, for making some of my most loyal readers wait so long for an update, I give you the first ever screenshot of WALAMU.com (make sure you magnify it, otherwise it looks fuzzy).

P.S. “Alredy should be “Already.”

Interview with Matt from MandLadventures.com

I just wanted to give everyone a heads up on my recent interview with Matt from MandLadventures.com. Matt runs a fantastic blog and was kind enough to conduct an interview about the specifics on Walamu.com. Check out the transcript here.

Further, if any readers would like to assist me in getting my second internship task done, I would really appreciate it. I have a short demographics survey for Digg users I need to get done. It can be found here. I need 100 responses and so far I only have 20. Please only respond if you are an avid, or even a regular Digg.com user. Thanks!

Dirt Cheap Hosting

For those of you currently on blogspot and those who are looking for a hosting plan for their new venture, you’re in luck. If you get your hosting via Dreamhost you get $50 off any plan when you use the Promo code; 50BuxxOFF. But wait, there’s more (sounding like a blatant commercial here). If you sign up for the 1 year level 1 plan featuring 20 GB Disk, 1000 GB Transfer, 1 free domain, UNLIMITED domains hosted, UNLIMITED subdomains hosted, 3000 mailboxes, and 75 shell/FTP users (which is what most people would opt for anyway) you get $60 off (using the same code, 50BuxxOFF). That comes out to $4.95 a month for 20 GB of Disk space! You can’t go wrong with that. Godaddy.com only offers you 5 GB off space and 250 GB of transfer for $3.59 a month.

Dreamhost is full of features and has a really cool user control panel as well as 24/7 support. Now keep in mind that not just anyone can take advantage of this discount. This is especially for all my entrepreneuring readers out there looking for a cheap hosting plan. This discount is actually coming out of my own affiliate reward so you guys get to take advantage of that. I get $97 for anyone who joins using my e-mail as a referrer or for anyone that uses my promo code (50BuxxOFF). Since, you guys get $50 off, however, I get $47 for each person that signs up for hosting (or $37 if you sign up for the 1 year level 1 plan). Plus I get $5 for every person you refer Dreamhost to. You guys can start earning that kind of cash as well. All you have to do is sign up as an affiliate with Dreamhost and get your own link or promo code. It only took me about 5 minutes to get this set up. Happy hosting!

How to Launch a Web 2.0 app

There are several things associated with a bunch of web 2.0 geeks and the launching of their new app. Among these include the following:

  • Throw a party featuring all of your app’s crazy tagging features and mashup technology.
  • Invite everyone using Soonr’s skype-mobile phone integration technology.
  • Have everyone mark the event using CalenderHub’s group calendar service.
  • Keep on top of your launch tasks using 37 signal’s Writeboard software.
  • Get word of your party onto TechCrunch.
  • Send out fifty million press releases about the launch of your app using theweblogwire.com (Just kidding about the 50 million part, don’t even try that).
  • Use Flickr to show off pics from the party.

Radioo

I just came across a cool new web app which came across to me as the web 2.0 version of Internet radio. The site is called Radioo, an internet radio station directory with a nice tag-based browsing system. Although the site is still somewhere between alpha and beta, it already features 104 stations. Users can also get updates on the stations they listen to via RSS feed.

From the site:

  • Tagging. You can now add tags to stations. Just visit the station’s page on Radioo, and enter a new tag.
  • RSS feeds. Get updates on the latest stations on Radioo. Subscribe to the latest feed, which shows the 10 latest stations added to the directory, or refine the feeds with tags. Subscribe to the feed on a particular tag’s page, and you’ll be kept updated with the 10 latest stations tagged with that tag.

Check them out at Radioo.net.
