What a CEO salary could buy you

Monday, June 5th, 2006

MSN Money recently did an article on this. Here’s the link: CEO salary

Some highlights from the article, which I found pretty jaw-dropping:

  • Enough money, before taxes, to raise 1,467 children through the age of 18.
  • Enough to cover four years of public-university education for 12,752 students.
  • Enough to pay off the credit card debt of 32,000 Americans.
  • Enough to fill up a Ford Taurus 4.2 million times
  • Enough gas to drive 1.4 billion miles in a Taurus.

Amazing the gap in earning power between executives and employees.

Skype it up with Dell

Friday, June 2nd, 2006

Skype and Dell agreed today to ship Skype’s video Internet calling software as an option to Dell’s new XPS mobile systems, the XPS M1210 and XPS M2010.

Under the terms of the agreement, Dell will offer to pre-load Skype on the XPS 1210 and 2010 as part of an optional audio-video communications package that also includes an integrated rotating webcam, noise-isolation earbuds and mobile broadband capability. The M1210 features a 12.1-inch display and retails for $1,300. The M2010 features a 20.1-inch high-definition display and retails for $3,500.”

There is concern, however, over Skype’s functionality with enterprise networks. Several bugs have been found and could jeopardize the infrastructure of businesses. Dell isn’t in an absolutely horrible position though as the software has only been installed on the XPS systems. They will have a hard sell, however, in trying to get IT to agree with having it installed on other systems. Get the full story here: Dell to Bundle Skype on New XPS Laptops

YouTube upgrade producing Internet Stars

Friday, June 2nd, 2006

YouTube recently had a major upgrade at it’s website on Friday allowing users to subscribe to channels that focus on the work of favorite artists or topical themes. Fans are now able to follow along with Internet cult like video performers like Anthony Padilla, aka “Smosh” (www.smosh.com). YouTube has shot up in U.S. Internet rankings in six months to become larger than any other provider of online videos. Read the full story here: YouTube upgrade turns one-hit wonds into stars

Success is for the Extraordinary

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006

Why Follow the Herd?

If one just looks at the social hierarchy present in our society it becomes apparent as to what works and what doesn’t in terms of being successful. Of course, success is an ambigious term and it’s definition is reliant on the individual defining it. Nevertheless, one must realize that 1% of the population in the United States is possesses more wealth than the other 99% combined. That statistic is startling. So why would you ever think of doing exactly what that 99% of the population is doing if you want to get to where the wealthier minority is?

Which is riskier? Having a job or owning a business?

It is really about being extraordinary and doing all you can to avoid the ordinary. We have been fed this concept where one has to go to school, get good grades, get into an Ivy League school, and only then will one be successful. One’s entire success depends on their grades in this system and ultimately leads to one source of survival-a job-which, might I add, is much more risky than owning a business where one has unlimited streams of income. If you lose one customer, you still have 999 customers that you are still receiving revenue from. Whereas, if you have a job, and you get laid off you have nowhere else to go for the time being.

The Answer

The overwhelming answer in my mind is entrepreneurship. And even more than that is to do what you love. So if you love helping people get better-then go ahead be a doctor. Society will reward you for it. Still, if you see a job as being a burden and not just because you are lazy, then why not do something you are passionate about? Be innovative. See entrepreneurship as doing something you love and helping people at the same time. The way you do this is by creating value. If you create a product or service then customers will find the value of that product or service more valuable than the money they are handing over to have it. Similarly, you create value when you gain revenue for the product or service you provide. One of the shining points about entrepreneurship is that it can really help improve the human condition. If you find someway that can improve life for other people, you can potentially capitalize on it. That, in essence, is what capitalism is all about.

So in all, do what you love and create something with people in mind. If you do, society will reward you for it -and you won’t have to worry about losing your job. ;)

The MetroNap

Sunday, April 16th, 2006

Coming soon to an airport near you. I’m just about to head out to JFK airport and remembered about an article I had read about MetroNaps. The company provides napping “pods” where tired travellers at locations such as airports can take a quick 20-minute nap for $12 and $4 for each additional 10 minutes. They are “white, ladle-shaped chairs that are partly enclosed to allow privacy without inducing claustrophobia. Headphones emit soft nature sounds to help drowsy travelers drift off to sleep. Attendants watch over the belongings of those in dreamland, who are gently awakened by soft vibrations. Post-nap peppermints and citrus-scented towelettes are provided, and nappers can arrange to have food waiting upon wake up.” Too bad JFK doesn’t have any in place as of yet :/
